Julie was born on December 3rd, 1960 in the city of Fayetteville, near Fort Bragg. She lived there with her father and her two siblings. Her mother, Late Anne McNeil McLean was a public-service driven psychiatric and she left her hometown Greenock, Scotland, due to some personal reason. Julianne’s father, Peter Moore Smith has done a number of jobs in his life. He has worked as a military lawyer, judge, pilot and army colonel.

As Julianne is the daughter of an army recruit, she had to relocate to places all over the world. She did her graduation from Boston University and got the degree of BFA from the school of performing arts. After completing her studies, she relocated to New York and began her struggle to become a successful actress.

Finally, in 1984, she got the chance to show her acting skills by playing the role of Carmen Engler in The Eight of Night. In 1992, she played the role of Marlene Craven in The Hand That Rocks the Cradle. It was the first film, which got her nominated for an award.
